SW Trip '08 Day 2 - Valley of Fire

CAPTION

Posing in the Alabama Hills, with Mt. Whitney in the background.

10/03/08 Friday

We took off early the next morning, with a brief stop in the Alabama Hills, an area of granite boulders and odd rock formations along the Whitney Portal road.

The Alabama Hills have been used by Hollywood in a zillion Western films, especially any film with Randolph Scott in it.

Lots of red, red rock.

We drove straight through Death Valley and Las Vegas to get to the Valley of Fire State Park, east of Las Vegas.

This area has also been used in Western films such as “The Professionals,” but mainly we were going there for the showers.

I guess they had more fingers back then.

The park features dramatic red sandstone formations and petroglyphs dating from 300 B.C. to 1150 A.D.

An ancient goat? Uterus? Hard to tell.

We parked at the Atlatl Campground for the night, and walked around Atlatl Rock until dark.

Exploring behind Atlatl Rock.

This park was a pleasant surprise, as all we were looking for was a shower and a place to spend the night.

I wanted a natural pose, but Nancy was worried about sliding off the rock.

The way the red rock emerges from the surrounding desert is very striking, and it’s cool walking around looking for petroglyphs and petrified logs.

The rocks get really red near sundown.

The park is big enough to spend a day or two hiking around, checking out the bizarro rock formations.
