NW Trip Day 4 - Spruce Burls & Hoh Rain Forest

Photo

The Spruce Burl Trail at Beach 1 just south of Kalaloch.

05/05/10 Wednesday

I’d never been to Olympic National Park, and the folks wanted to visit that area, so we drove up for a couple of days before continuing on to Victoria.

Burly.

There’s a number of beach trails near the town of Kalaloch, including the Spruce Burl Trail.

Does this make my butt look small?

The grove contains a large number of trees with burls, which feels like an alien landscape.

Fishermen are such litterbugs.

There’s miles of beaches in the area easily accessed from the highway.

The phone booth at the Hoh Rain Forest.

We then drove to the Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic Natl. Park.

Look out, she’s got her walking poles.

The Visitor Center was closed, so we took a short walk on the Hall of Mosses trail.

Photo

Where’s the moss?

The rain forest is pretty impressive, unless you grew up in the Pac Northwest, in which case it’s more of the same.

Photo

You won’t see this in California.

The rain forest has a tremendous amount of blowdown; the trees don’t grow deep roots because water is so plentiful.

Lush, verdant, fecund, etc.

We spent the night in the nearby campground.
