We woke up to a layer of ice from the rain that froze overnight. My back was just a little stiff after a night of sleeping with no pads.
After shaking off the stiffness, we decided to ride the trail system that climbs above Cave Lake. We started up the Cave Overlook Trail in a group of aspens. Little did we realize …
… that there was no letup to the pitch. Steep, no rocks, but some tough switchbacks. A very fit rider could ride it, but the climb was beyond our abilities.
Looking west towards Steptoe Valley and Ward Mountain (10,941’).
There was only about a mile or so of pushing, so no big deal.
The trail climbs from about 7300’ to 8400’. Even at this elevation there are reminders that you’re still in the desert.
The downhill was super fun, smooth and rolly through the pinyons and junipers.
The scenery was more interesting than what you usually see in Nevada, with limestone formations surrounding the area.
We rode about five miles of flowing downhill, amazed to find such a well made trail out in the middle of nowhere.
It’s a highly recommended bike ride. The climb up would be a lot easier as an out-and-back from the road, but we were happy with the route we took.
