SW Trip Day 6 - Bike Monitor & Merrimac Trail

Photo

An historic stage stop near the start of the trail.

10/15/13 Tuesday

Today we rode the Monitor & Merrimac trail, a little bit north of Moab. It’s a six mile loop the begins and ends in sand drainages but is all slickrock in between.

Heading up going out.

The trail is pretty easy, with fairly gentle climbs and nothing technical.

One short, uphill sandy section.

The only difficult spot is a little bit of sand.

Coming out of the canyon.

As you come out of the canyon, the riding becomes all slickrock.

Entering Wile E. Coyote country.

Mesa bonita.

The scenery is amazing. Half the time I felt like laughing because it was like being in a Road Runner cartoon.

Passing a large slickrock bowl.

It’s always weird coming to Moab and riding on vast areas of solid rock. It’s so different than riding anywhere else.

Looping around the high point of the trail.

The trail is marked by white dashes painted on the rock, typical of the slickrock trails around Moab.

You can ride for miles without touching dirt.

Heading back down.

The trail out goes through a narrow sandy drainage. If we were to do it again, we would just circle back the way we came and spend more time exploring the slickrock.

Back at the car.

Easy ride, very scenic, and primitive campsites nearby.

Driving near the Fisher Towers.

We passed the Fisher Towers on highway 128 on our drive from Moab to Fruita. This is yet another area that would be fun to spend more time hiking around.

Nancy’s first time in Colorado since she was about ten years old.

We headed on to Fruita to spend the next three nights.
