SW Trip Day 7 - Bike Fruita

Photo

Riding up the Prime Cut trail.

10/16/13 Wednesday

We arrived in Fruita last night and got a campsite at the James Robb campground in the middle of town.

The mountain bike trails in Fruita have been getting a lot of attention, especially the 18 Road Trails north of town.

Heading uphill near the top of the trail.

The 18 Road area features miles of trails and dirt roads below a steep ridgeline. The trails are generally smooth and non-technical, with short steep sections on the upper part.

Getting steeper.

The ridge (“The Book Cliffs”) rises 2000’ above the valley. There is a 28-mile epic ride called The Edge Loop that runs along the ridgeline.

We thought about it, but 28 miles and 2000 feet of climbing is a long day.

Taking a break upon reaching the top.

Heading down Chutes and Ladders.

The lower trails are low-angle and flowy, while the upper part has more up-and-down through tight gullies.

Gullies ahead.

Charging up out of a gully.

There are very few rocks on the trails. The trails are so smooth that we saw groups of kids riding around on an organized field trip.

Where are we?

We made a big figure-8, riding the southern flat section of the Edge Loop.

Stopping for a snack.

The charms of riding in a desert.

This area is almost like a desert version of Phil’s Trail in Bend, Oregon, although not nearly as extensive.

Taking the Vegetarian Loop back to the car.

It’s a fun little area, although there are more scenic rides in the Fuita area next to the Colorado River.
